Honest comparison

Sopoints vs Square Loyalty

Square Loyalty is a solid add-on if you already run Square POS and want a simple single-brand punch or points program. Sopoints is a standalone coalition loyalty system that works with Square — and also without it. Here is an honest breakdown of where each fits.

The fundamental difference: add-on vs network

Square Loyalty is a feature of the Square ecosystem. It is tightly integrated with Square POS, configured from the Square dashboard, and its program is single-brand: points earned at your business are only redeemable at your business.

Sopoints is a coalition loyalty system. Your customers earn points with you and can redeem across a network of 1,000+ Canadian merchants — which also means customers holding points from elsewhere in the network have a reason to walk into your shop. Square Loyalty retains the customers you have; a coalition additionally acquires ones you do not.

Pricing models are structurally different

Square Loyalty is priced per location with tiers based on monthly loyalty visits — in Canada the published tiers start at $60/month per location and rise with visit volume. There is no free tier beyond the 30-day trial, and each additional location adds its own subscription.

Sopoints has a free plan with no credit card and no trial clock, which includes the points engine, customer app and digital wallet cards. Paid plans add multi-location support, advanced campaigns and POS integrations. For a single-location business testing whether loyalty works at all, the cost of finding out is zero.

POS dependency

Square Loyalty requires Square POS — if you ever switch POS, the loyalty program and its customer data are part of what you are leaving.

Sopoints integrates natively with Square and Lightspeed today (Clover, Toast and Shopify coming soon), but also runs with no POS at all via QR codes or NFC tap — the program is not welded to your till.

Customer identification: Square uses the payment card or phone lookup at a Square terminal; Sopoints uses phone number, QR scan or NFC tap on any hardware.

Data portability: Sopoints supports full customer-list export including balances on every plan, so you are never renting your own customer relationships.

When Square Loyalty is the right choice

If you are all-in on Square, want zero extra vendor relationships, and specifically want a private single-brand program with no network branding, Square Loyalty is a genuinely good product with excellent checkout integration. Its enrolment-at-payment flow is about as frictionless as single-brand loyalty gets.

Choose Sopoints when you want the program to bring in new customers rather than only retain existing ones, when you want a free starting point, when you are not on Square POS, or when you want the loyalty program to survive a future POS change.
